Women's Volleyball Begins Season With Alumni Match At 6 p.m. Saturday
Aug 22, 2013
Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State's women's volleyball team will open the 2013 season with its annual alumni match, held at 6 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, August 24. As part of the festivities, the 49ers will honor the 1993 National Championship team prior to the match on the 20th anniversary of that victory.
The 49ers are lucky to have some of the most distinguished alumnae in all of the sport of women's volleyball, and many will return Saturday for an annual tradition as the 2013 women's volleyball team will begin their season with an exhibition match against a tremendous collection of former 49ers.
Among those in attendance will be a large number of the former players from the 1993 National Championship squad that went 32-2 and won the 49ers' second NCAA championship. Five-time Olympian Danielle Scott-Arruda will be playing for the alumni, as will current TCU head coach Prentice Perkins-Lewis, both representing the '93 squad, while Allyson Mendel Carpenter, Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer, Shawnee Smith Hayes, Stephanie Streeks Ruffridge, Michelle Jones, and assistant coach Debbie Green are all planning to attend and be recognized for their outstanding accomplishment 20 years ago.
Over 30 alumni should be in attendance, and the group should provide an excellent test for the 2013 team which returns five starters and eight letterwinners from a year ago.
For tickets, contact the Walter Pyramid Box Office at (562) 985-4949, or tickets can be purchased online.
