Aug. 13, 2012
Long Beach, Calif. - On Saturday, August 18, London Gold Medalist Misty May-Treanor will be among the alumni facing Long Beach State as the 2012 women's volleyball team begins play in the Goldmine at 7 p.m.
May-Treanor, who announced her retirement following her Gold Medal run in London, headlines a team that features both sand and indoor professionals, as well as other former 49ers in an annual exhibition.
With her partner Kerri Walsh Jennings, May-Treanor captured a third consecutive Gold Medal in Beach Volleyball, capping her amazing career in sand volleyball, as the pair went unbeaten in Olympic play in Athens, Beijing and London.
Middle blocker and 2011 honorable mention All-American Haleigh Hampton leads the 49ers in the 2012 campaign, as Long Beach State looks to defend their 2011 Big West championship against the conference, including new member Hawaii, who rejoins the league in 2012. The 49ers were picked to finish second behind the Rainbow Wahine in the Big West preseason coaches poll.
Long Beach State received 66 votes in the AVCA preseason poll, beginning the season just outside of the Top 25. After playing against the alumni, the 49ers will begin the season on August 24, traveling to Lexington, Kent. for the Kentucky classic where they will play Lipscomb and North Carolina before closing out the tournament against the hosts, No. 13 Kentucky.
