LONG BEACH, Calif. – For the third consecutive year, the Long Beach State women’s volleyball team was picked to finish second in the Big West in a poll of the conference’s coaches. The Big West released the poll on Wednesday with Hawai’i claiming the top spot but four teams collecting at least one first-place vote.
The 49ers were one of those four teams to nab a first-place vote. They totaled 68 points with one vote to finish atop the conference. The Rainbow Wahine were they only team picked above LBSU for the third consecutive year. They racked up 77 points and received five first-place votes. UC Santa Barbara picked up two votes to finish first and totaled 63 points to earn a third-place spot in the poll. CSUN was the fourth team to pick up a vote and was pegged to finish fourth.
A total of 18 points separated fourth-place CSUN from fifth-place UC Irvine while only eight points separated LBSU in second to CSUN in fourth. Cal Poly, UC Davis, Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside finished out the poll in that order.
LBSU returns four starters from last season, including All-Region middle blocker Chisom Okpala for her senior season. Fellow seniors Chelsea Cabrajac, Bre Mackie and Tyler Jackson also return to the floor to lead the 49ers.
The 2014 season begins in Illinois for Long Beach State on Aug. 29 at the Illini Classic, where they will face Illinois, North Carolina and Southern Illinois. The 49ers home-opener will be the following Thursday against Idaho.
