49ers Picked Second In 2013 Preseason Coaches Poll

2012 All-American Chisom Okpala and the 49ers were picked to finish second in the Big West in the 2013 season.

Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State was picked to finish in second place during the 2013 women's volleyball season in the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll, released today by the conference office.

Long Beach State returns two All-American middle blockers in 2012 First-Team All-Region selection Chisom Okpala and 2011 First-Team All-Region pick Haleigh Hampton. The two outstanding juniors are joined by senior outside hitter Delainey Aigner-Swesey, junior opposite Bre Mackie and junior defensive specialists Tyler Jackson and Chelsea Cabrajac, as the 49ers return a veteran corps to challenge favorite Hawai'i for the 2013 Big West title.

The Rainbow Wahine were picked to defend their 2012 championship, earning all nine first-place votes for 81 points. Long Beach State was picked second, and finished with 72 points, picked second by all nine coaches in the conference.

Cal State Northridge, UC Davis and UC Irvine followed in third, fourth, and fifth place in the voting, while UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly and UC Riverside rounded out the order for the coaches.

The 2013 season for Long Beach State kicks off on August 24, when the team hosts the alumni match in its annual exhibition. The 49ers will then start the regular season by hosting the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational, an outstanding non-conference tournament that will feature Illinois, Kentucky and Florida State beginning on August 30 in the Walter Pyramid.
