LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team announced its 2014 schedule, which again features two home tournaments. The Beach will also travel to a pair of tournament prior to the 16-match Big West schedule that runs the final 10 weeks of the season.

The two home tournaments – the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational and the LBSU/LMU Tournament – are sandwiched between both tournaments on the road. The 49ers will open the 2014 season in the Midwest at the Illini Classic in Champaign, Ill. and wrap up the nonconference season at the Roadrunner Classic Volleyball Tournament in Bakersfield, Calif.

The season begins with one of the toughest trips of the season to the Illini Classic Aug. 29-30. The 49ers will open up with the hosts of the tournament, Illinois, in a rematch of last year’s first weekend contest. The Beach took that match 3-1 from the Illini, who went on to make the NCAA Tournament. LBSU’s next opponent, North Carolina, also made the NCAA Tournament. Long Beach State wil wrap up the Illini Classic with Southern Illinois.

Idaho, Campbell, Army and San Francisco will all make the trip to the Pyramid for the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational from Sep. 4-6. LBSU will host Idaho in the only match on Sep. 4. The Beach will turn around and play Campbell and Army on Sep.5 and wrap up the tournament against San Francisco on Sep. 6.

On Sep. 11, Long Beach State will host LMU to start another four-match weekend at home in the LBSU/LMU Tournament. That tournament will also feature St. Mary’s, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Northern Colorado. Two matches will take place at Walter Pyramid on Friday while a full day’s worth of three matches will happen on the floor of Walter Pyramid on Saturday.

A quick trip to Bakersfield draws an end to the nonconference schedule with matches lined up against Fresno State, Bakersfield and Oregon State on Sep. 19-20. After that, the 49ers jump right in to the Big West schedule, which opens on the road.

Road matches at UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton open up conference play on Sep. 26 and 27, respectively. The 49ers return home for the next two weeks but play only one match in each of those weeks. Cal State Northridge – one of three teams to tie for the conference crown and make the NCAA Tournament last year – is the first to visit the Pyramid on Oct. 3. Next up is another one of those three title teams. Hawai’i visits on Oct. 11. LBSU travels up to the Central Coast schools on Oct. 17-18 and is back home against UC Riverside on Oct. 24 and UC Davis on Oct. 25.

The return trips start Nov. 1 with a match at CSUN and continue with the long trip to the islands to face Hawai’i on Nov. 7. LBSU is back home on Nov. 14 against Cal Poly and Nov. 15 to host UC Santa Barbara. The trip up to UC Davis is on Nov. 20 followed by a trip to UC Riverside on Nov. 22.

The season wraps up with rivalry matches against the two opponents from the OC. UC Irvine comes to the Pyramid on Nov. 28 and Cal State Fullerton wraps up the regular season schedule on Nov. 29.

With 16 of its 30 matches at home, Long Beach State is looking to end its two-year drought from the postseason. Head coach Brian Gimmillaro and the 49ers have their sights set on another exciting season after finishing with an 18-11 overall record last year.
