Gimmillaro Adds Two For 2014 Women's Volleyball Season
April 29, 2014
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro announced two additions to the Long Beach State women’s volleyball team for the 2014 season. Anete Brinke and Sophie Bukovec will join the 49ers in the fall.
Both Brinke and Bukovec come to the Beach as already accomplished players on the hardwood and in the sand for their respective countries. Bukovec has competed for Canada in five junior world sand championships and has been with Canada’s national team for two years. Brinke has competed on Latvia’s junior national team since 2010.
Bukovec played one year at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada and led her team to an OUA Championship. It was just the second OUA title in school history. She averaged 3.15 kills per set and 2.22 dig per set while serving up 20 aces. At the end of the season, she was named the OUA Final Four’s MVP.
“Sophie is an experienced indoor and outdoor player,” commented Gimmillaro. “She is an outside hitter, who had a good first college season. She’ll come in and help us right away. She is a skilled six rotation player.”
Brinke has a wealth of international experience on the sand and on the hardwood in representing Latvia. She was selected as the one of the MVPs of the Latvian Championship in 2014.
“Anete can play in the middle or on the right side. I believe she will help us this season in either position. She also has extensive experience in the sand,” said Gimmillaro.
“I believe both Anete and Sophie will contribute to the success of the team next year.”
Gimmillaro will head into his 30th season as head coach of the women’s volleyball program at Long Beach State next season. The 2014 schedule will be released later in the spring.
