Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State's Matt Ulmer was recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as a "Thirty Under 30" Recipient, a program designed by the AVCA to single out up-and-coming coaching talent.
Ulmer, who started his time at Long Beach State in 2007 as a volunteer assistant coach for the women's volleyball team in 2007, has since been promoted to a full-time assistant coach for the women's team since the 2009 season.
Additionally, Ulmer has taken on head coaching responsibilities for the Long Beach State Sand Volleyball team, where he was an assistant last season while helping guide the team to the AVCA National Championship, where the team finished as the National Runner-Up in the inaugural season of Sand Volleyball.
This season, as head coach of the program, Ulmer has led the 49ers to a 3-0 record and a No. 2 ranking the preseason AVCA Sand Volleyball poll, with wins over No. 4 Florida State, No. 8 Florida International, and Loyola Marymount to his credit.
"Sustainability is all about identifying rising stars and nurturing their career growth," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer in a statement. "This Thirty Under 30 class, the AVCA's fifth, is full of future leaders in the sport of volleyball. We congratulate them and, through them, celebrate our potential."
