49ers start Day Two of Thanksgiving Classic with 3-0 win

Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State returned to its regular lineup and top form Saturday morning in a 25-15, 25-17, 25-11 victory over LMU. The 49ers were strong at the net, making 14.5 blocks and holding the Lions to .018 hitting. Long Beach State hit .252 on the match and were led by Brittney Herzog, who finished with 12 kills on .526 hitting, while Ashley Lee added six kills and 14 digs along with 28 assists. Lauren Minkel led the 49ers defensively with 18 digs, and Laura Schuck also finished in double-digits with 12 digs. The 49ers took an early 7-4 lead behind three kills from Jocelyn Neely. Long Beach State then kept the lead the rest of the way, eventually extending it to 17-11 before an LMU timeout. Two of Long Beach State's 3.5 blocks in the set put The Beach ahead 21-12. Following that was Laura Shuck's third ace, giving the 49ers set point, and a Brittney Herzog kill ended set one at 25-15. Long Beach State's first push came early in the second set, as the 49ers took a 7-4 lead courtesy of a couple Michelle Osunbor kills. The 49ers continued to maintain a large edge, eventually taking a 15-7 lead on an Ashley Lee kill. LMU rallied to cut the lead back to four points at 21-17, but Long Beach State answered with four straight points and won the set 25-17. The 49er momentum continued out of the break, as Long Beach State stormed out to an 8-3 lead. More Osunbor blocks helped The Beach to a 13-5 edge, and Long Beach State finished off the match with an easy 25-11 victory. The 49ers conclude hosting duties of the Mizuno Thanksgiving Classic this evening at 7:30 p.m. against Utah. Long Beach State will also honor their two seniors, Brittney Herzog and Naomi Washington in a brief ceremony prior to the match.
