Nov. 5, 2017

Box Score

HONOLULU - Long Beach State (7-19, 4-9 Big West) suffered a 25-14, 25-11, 25-10 loss to Hawai’i (18-7, 12-2 Big West) on Saturday night, suffering defeat in LBSU’s final road match of the season. Sophomore Hailey Harward led Long Beach State with six kills and 14 digs but the Rainbow Wahine came away with the win on UH’s Senior Night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Redshirt senior Rachel Nieto added 10 digs in the match and YiZhi Xue was second on the team in kills with five, finishing with a .385 hitting percentage. LBSU was even with Hawai’i in blocking as each had 5.0 as a team. The Beach went without a service ace as a team for the first time all season.

The Beach kept things close early in set one, before UH used a 6-0 run to lead 12-5. The Hawai’i lead eventually reached double-digits at 17-7, and LBSU responded with an immediate 3-0 run. Long Beach State never got closer than that, however, as UH took the 1-0 lead in the match.

LBSU started set two on a solid note as Harward recorded a kill and a solo block to put the Beach up 2-0. That advantage was short-lived, however, as UH went on an immediate 5-0 run to force a Long Beach timeout. It ended up being an 11-1 run for the Rainbow Wahine, as the hosts eventually ran away with the set leading 24-9 before LBSU grabbed a few more late points. Harward had four kills and five digs in the second set while taking 16 swings.

UH finished things off by hitting .472 in the third set, while LBSU posted a .081 hitting percentage. The Rainbow Wahine raced out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back. Xue and Brooke Earkman each had a pair of kills in set three.

The Beach will head back to the mainland and play its final three matches inside the comforts of Walter Pyramid. LBSU hosts UC Riverside on Friday and takes on Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, with both matches starting at 7 p.m.
