LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State hit .357 in the opening set to take a 1-0 lead on Friday night, but visiting UC Davis recovered for a 17-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-22 victory at Walter Pyramid. The Beach fall to 6-18 overall and 4-6 in Big West action while UC Davis improves to 12-11 and 4-6 in conference play.
Sophomore Hailey Harward had a strong night for the Beach, recording her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs. Megan Kruidhof and YiZhi Xue each had eight kills, with the latter posting a .467 hitting percentage. Redshirt senior Rachel Nieto added 11 digs and a career-high four aces.
The night got off to a good start as LBSU won the opening set comfortably. The Beach utilized a key 5-0 run to go up 12-10, forcing a UC Davis timeout. Long Beach State gained additional breathing room thanks to a 4-0 run which made it 22-15 and a Kruidhof kill eventually ended the set. Harward had four kills on seven swings to go with four digs in set one as the Beach made just two hitting errors and collected four aces in the frame.
Set two was there for the taking, but the Aggies made their move with the game tied at 16. UC Davis rattled off four straight points thanks to three LBSU errors and a service ace, taking control of the set. UCD freshman Mahalia White had eight kills in set two to pace the Aggies and draw the match level.
The third belonged to the visitors as LBSU was out-hit .440 to .000 in the set. The Aggies won the first four points and never trailed, using a pair of 6-0 runs to swell their lead to double digits and eventually take a 2-1 lead in the match.
It looked like Long Beach State had things working in set four, jumping out to a 12-5 lead. But from that point, Davis went on a 14-3 run, winning eight in a row at one point to force both LBSU timeouts. The set took another turn when a successful challenge by Davis reversed a point in the Aggies’ favor. What would have been a 20-20 score on a hitting error by White was changed to a kill to make it 21-19 UC Davis. The Aggies would hold on to take the set and the match, getting 11 kills from White in the fourth set as she finished with a match-high 27.
LBSU is back in action on Saturday night at Walter Pyramid, hosing UC Irvine at 7 p.m. in a Black and Blue Rivalry match.
