Sept. 27, 2013
Santa Barbara, Calif. - SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Alex Reid finished with 17 kills, and Delainey Aigner-Swesey added 16 as Long Beach State rallied from a two sets to one deficit to defeat UC Santa Barbara on the road 22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16, 15-13.
A Reid kill gave Long Beach State (8-6) a late lead in the fifth set at 10-9, and the 49ers were able to push an additional point to take a two-point led in the set. The 49ers would never again surrender the lead in the set, taking a 15-13 win with a Chisom Okpala kill to cap off a thrilling comeback over UC Santa Barbara (5-8).
The 49ers carried the momentum into the fifth set from a dominant fourth, where the 49ers won the final seven points of the set, including an ace from junior Chelsea Cabrajac in a 25-16 win.
That helped Long Beach State recover from two close set losses in the first and third sets, which gave the home team the edge early in Santa Barbara. Long Beach State was able to keep the match going however, with a furious rally in the second set.
Trailing 17-12 and already down 1-0 in the match, Long Beach State got a kill from Aigner-Swesey for a key sideout, and Long Beach State went on a big run. Three more kills from Aigner-Swesey, two from Reid, and a dump from Erin Juley helped the 49ers turn that deficit into a 19-17 lead, and the 49ers went on to take set two 25-22, giving the team the chance to complete the comeback in five.
Long Beach State continues Big West play Saturday, facing Cal Poly at 7 p.m. in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
