Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State’s Nele Barber had 12 kills on .360 hitting and the 49ers held UC Davis to .010 hitting as a team, cruising to a 25-11, 25-22, 25-12 win over UC Davis on Friday. In the process, head coach Brian Gimmillaro picked up the 800th win of his career, with all 800 coming at Long Beach State.

“If you stick around long enough, you can win 800 games, but we’ve also won almost 80 percent of our matches over that time, and that’s the number that’s good,” said Gimmillaro following the victory. “Maintaining that for 31 years is the hard part, and that’s what I’m most proud of.”

“It’s really special to have won them all at Long Beach State,” added the 31st year head coach. “One of the things that I wanted to do was show that you can be successful and celebrated as a coach without having to leave Long Beach, and being at one school. I’m proud to have been supported enough to be able to do it all here.”

Gimmillaro becomes just the fourth active coach to reach 800 wins at one institution, and is only the 14th coach ever to record 800 wins at the Division I level.

No. 25 Long Beach State (11-3, 1-0 Big West) dominated play defensively, making nine blocks in the sweep, as well as making 45 digs in the match. The 49ers got a lift from the return of Ashley Murray, who hit .308 with six kills and were guided to .298 hitting by Jenelle Hudson, who finished with 32 assists.

Kaylin Squyres started the match with a kill for UC Davis (5-10, 0-1 Big West), but Long Beach State quickly jumped out into the lead. A Nele Barber kill continued a run for the Beach out of a UC Davis timeout, and the 49er lead would grow to 13-4 before an Aggies sideout. The Beach remained firmly in control for the rest of the set, as a Mykah Wilson and Hayley Benson block increased the LBSU lead to 23-11, and the 49ers closed out the set 25-11 for their largest margin of victory on the year. Barber had five kills in the set, hitting .556.

UC Davis took an early lead in the second set, going up 5-1. Two straight aces for Sophia Mar increased the Aggies lead to 9-2, and then a 49er error gave UC Davis an eight-point lead. Long Beach State bounced back, however, cutting the Aggies lead to two at 11-9 on a Wilson ace. A kill from Murray brought the Beach within one at 16-15, and then the 49ers took their first lead of the set on a Benson/Barber block at 18-17. A seven-point run for the 49ers continued to increase the LBSU lead to 22-17, and two straight Benson/Barber blocks killed a small UCD rally on the way to a 25-22 win.

Out of the break, Long Beach State quickly took an 8-2 lead on a Benson kill, and an ace by Barber stretched the lead to 13-5. Another extended run with three straight Carly Beddingfield kills pushed the 49ers to an 18-7 advantage, and the Beach closed out the sweep with a 25-12 win.

Long Beach State returns to the Walter Pyramid tomorrow, taking a 1-0 Big West mark into a Black & Blue Rivalry match against UC Irvine. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
