Sept. 20, 2013
Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State opened the Baden Classic in smooth fashion, defeating Bakersfield in three sets 25-20, 25-21, 25-13. Sophomore Alex Reid led the way for the 49ers with 15 kills on .321 hitting.
Bre Mackie and Delainey Aigner-Swesey also each finished in double-figure kills for the 49ers, who also dominated at the net, finishing with 11 blocks, led by freshman Joy Miley who had six on the match.
Long Beach State lost the first point of the match, but then rallied to win the next five, taking an early 5-1 lead. The 49ers eventually opened up a 15-9 lead, but Bakersfield climbed back into the set, pulling within one point at 16-15. Aigner-Swesey picked up a kill for a sideout, and two straight kills from Reid gave the 49ers a 21-18 lead. Long Beach State finished off the set with a 25-20 win.
Aigner-Swesey picked up an early kill to give the 49ers an early 5-3 lead, which Long Beach State pushed to four at 9-5 on another kill from Reid. Leading 14-8 after an overpass kill from Reid, the sophomore returned back-to-back blocks to give Long Beach State a 22-16 lead. The Runners fought back to cut the lead to two points at 23-21, but a Mackie kill followed by a Makayla Taylor ace finished off the set in a 25-21 win for the 49ers.
Long Beach State took a 4-1 lead in the third set on a solo block from Miley, and held that cushion through most of the set. Leading 12-9 after a kill by Reid, the 49ers pushed to a 15-10 lead on a kill from Okpala, and then 18-12 on a block from Okpala and Erin Juley. The 49ers then finished off the match with a 25-13 win.
