Oct. 17, 2012
Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State tennis will conclude the first half of the 2012-13 season this weekend, heading to San Diego to participate in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, which are co-hosted by San Diego State and San Diego.
The ITA split regions strictly by geography, splitting the Southwest Region strictly into Southern California and Arizona. 15 schools will be participating in this weekend's tournament, with competition beginning with the first two rounds of singles on Thursday. The doubles draw will start on Thursday as well, but only the Round of 64 will be contested.
That means that only one doubles team for the 49ers will play on Thursday, since two teams received byes into the Round of 32. Ebba Unden and Klaudia Malenovska will start off Long Beach State's competition in San Diego, facing Leighann Sahagun and Stephanie Vlad of Arizona State.
In singles, the 49ers are spread throughout the draw. Four players will start the tournament in the Round of 128, beginning with Karolina Rozenberg, who will face LMU's Tori Parravi. Senior Klaudia Malenovska also gets an opening round match, previewing a new Big West opponent in Hawaii's Rebecca Faltusz. Freshman Ebba Unden will play Arizona's Susan McRann, and Sarah Cantlay will also face a Big West conference opponent in Hawaii's Katarina Poljakova.
Three players will also receive byes into the Round of 64. Freshman Anne-Sophie Willems faces a seeded opponent in (10) No. 79 Kaitlin Ray of UCLA, while Anna Jeczmionka faces the winner of UCLA's Megan Lester and LMU's Reka Rohonyi. Freshman Eva Rodriguez rounds out the 49er competitors, and will face Dylan Kirsch of UCLA.
The ITA Regionals also feature a consolation draw, which will begin on Friday after Thursday's competition.
