Senior Klaudia Malenovska and the 49ers return to action this weekend.
Oct. 4, 2012
Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State continues the fall season this weekend, playing in the three-day Fullerton Invitational. Featuring three flights of singles and two flights of doubles, the 49ers will be in action against nine other teams, including four other Big West programs.
At the UNLV Invitational, the 49ers faced a number of ranked opponents in the first action of the season, but the defending Big West champions will be favored in many matches this weekend, increasing expectations for Long Beach State. The 49ers will have six players participating, and all six are in the top flight of doubles, and in the top two flights in singles this weekend.
Along with the 49ers, who finished the 2012 season ranked No. 36 nationally, the tournament will feature UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Northridge, and the hosts, Cal State Fullerton, all from the Big West. Other teams in the tournament include Portland State, Southern Utah, Loyola Marymount, and Concordia-Irvine.
Senior Klaudia Malenovska is slated as the No. 2 overall seed in the initial draw for the top flight, and will receive a bye into the Round of 16, as will freshman Eva Rodriguez. Meanwhile, Long Beach State's other two seniors, Sarah Cantlay and Anna Jeczmionka will also be participating in the top flight. Cantlay will face off against Loyola Marymount's April Bisharat, while Jeczmionka, who is tied for the team lead in singles wins this season following the UNLV Invitational, will play Monica Rodriguez of the host Titans.
The remaining 49ers will play in the B Flight of singles, with freshman Anne-Sophie Willems playing Avriel Tomiko of Cal State Fullerton in the opening round, while sophomore Karolina Rozenberg will receive a bye as the second seed of the second flight.
In doubles, all three teams will begin play in the Round of 16 of the top flight. One pair from the opening weekend will remain the same for the 49ers, as Willems and Rozenberg will again play together, facing Cos/Meehan of UC Santa Barbara to start doubles play. Malenovska and Rodriguez will be paired at the top of the draw, playing Ignatova/Piller of Concorida, while Cantlay and Jeczmionka will play together against Cal State Northridge's Pistalu/Warren to begin the tournament.
Action at the Fullerton Invitational will begin Friday morning, and continue through Sunday at Cal State Fullerton.
