LONG BEACH, Calif. -
Long Beach State head women’s tennis coach Jenny Hilt-Costello announced the 2013-14 schedule on Friday.
“I’m very happy with the schedule we were able to put together for this upcoming season,” Hilt-Costello said. “We’re starting off the year with some great tournaments in the fall that will help get us rolling and ready for the spring season.”
The 49ers will begin the year on the road when they travel to Las Vegas for the UNLV Fall Invitational from Sept. 20-22. The very next weekend, LBSU will return back to Southern California for the All American Tournament, which is held in Los Angeles Sept. 28 – Oct. 6. Following that, Beach Tennis will host their annual Fall Invitational the first weekend in October. Long Beach State will then finish out the fall season in San Diego at the ITA West Regional Oct. 17-21.
The spring season kicks off with the third annual Beach Classic on Jan. 10-12. The tournament will feature conference foe Cal State Northridge as well as Portland and Denver, who finished last season ranked 62nd in the final ITA rankings.
The 49ers then travel to Hawai’i to face Washington on Jan. 19 in a non-conference match. The huskies finished the 2012-13 season ranked No. 46. The next day, LBSU will begin conference play against the Rainbow Wahine.
The following week begins a five-match home stand for the 49ers who will host San Diego State (No. 41) on Jan. 25 followed by Big West opponent Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 31. On Feb. 7, LBSU has a chance to avenge last season’s narrow loss to non-conference opponent, LMU. The 49ers then host San Jose State (No. 63) on Feb. 8 and UC Davis to finish out the stretch on Feb. 15.
Beach Tennis then is on the road for one match at Cal State Northridge on Feb. 21 before spending the entire month of March at home against eight non-conference opponents.
“We always look to schedule tough, non-conference matches during March,” Hilt-Costello said. “This year, we’re able to host some great opponents, including three that ended the year in the rankings.”
The 49ers will begin March by hosting BYU on March 1, followed by Tulane (No. 50) on March 6 and Montana on March 8. 55th-ranked Pepperdine then makes the trip down to Long Beach on March 15 and Wyoming returns on March 19. The 49ers then play host to a pair of Ivy League schools in Dartmouth on March 20 and Harvard (No. 68) on March 22. LBSU will then close out the month by hosting Sacramento State on March 27.
The 49ers open up April on the road as they travel to UC Santa Barbara on April 4 and Cal Poly on April 5. April 12 marks a huge match as LBSU hosts long-time conference rival UC Irvine (No. 33).
“The match with UCI is one that we look forward to every year,” Hilt-Costello said. “For the past couple of seasons, this match has determined who wins the conference regular season title, making it one we always circle on our calendar.”
The 49ers then close out the regular season on the road at UC Riverside on April 18. The Big West Tournament will once again be held in Indian Wells from April 25-27 before NCAA post-season action begins May 9.
