Natalia Munoz Wins ITA Summer Circuit Tournament

AZUSA, Calif. - Beach Tennis’ Natalia Munoz won her first ITA Summer Circuit Tournament on Monday with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Julia Deming at Azusa Pacific University. The Long Beach State sophomore becomes the first player in program history to win an ITA summer event.

“My game plan was to play all of my matches really aggressive and look for opportunities to move forward towards the net,” Munoz said. “With each match, I felt more and more comfortable executing my plan.”

During her run to the tournament title, the No. 5 seed Munoz won six singles matches including several over other collegiate players. Key victories came versus Paulina Ferrari of Columbia (7-5, 6-3), Jennifer Kerr of Columbia (3-6, 7-5, 10-8), and a victory over the No. 1 seed, Savannah Slaysman from Arizona State (6-4, 6-2).

“I was so happy to see my hard work pay off in my matches this weekend,” said Munoz. “I am so excited to come away with this tournament win which was a goal for me this summer.”

The Santa Clarita, Calif. native is coming off a solid freshman season at the Beach, when she was 15-6 in singles play during the dual match season. Overall, Munoz had 21 singles wins and 14 doubles victories in her first season at Long Beach State.

Beach Tennis returns to the courts in mid-September with its first fall tournament at UNLV, Sep. 22-24 in Las Vegas, Nev. LBSU will be back home at Rhodes Tennis Center for the Beach Tennis Tournament on Oct. 6.
