LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State women's tennis coach Jenny Hilt-Costello announced her team's schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 season, which includes a healthy number of home contests. Of the 19 regular season matches for the Beach during dual match play, 12 will be played at Rhodes Tennis Center against strong competition from across the country.
"Our schedule is built to develop our squad to peak at the end of the season," Hilt-Costello said. "We have our usual March homestand when the snow bird schools come west for spring break, which enables us to bolster our schedule without the cost of travel."
LBSU opens the dual match season with a trip to UC Riverside on Jan. 26, which will also kick off Big West action. The home opener is on Saturday, Feb. 3 against St. Mary's with an 11 a.m. first serve. The majority of this season's matches will be played in Southern California, save for one East Coast trip in February. LBSU will head to the DMV to face George Washington (Feb. 16) and Maryland (Feb. 17) on consecutive days.
"We are excited about our February trip to Washington D.C. for the first time since 2010," said Hilt-Costello. "We will face a very strong Maryland team, an improving GWU squad, and can give our team a special experience, which I've long felt is an important part of the collegiate opportunity."
Following that trip, the Beach hosts eight consecutive matches from Feb. 24-Mar. 23. Included in that stretch will be matches against Ivy League opponents Penn (Mar. 6) and Dartmouth (Mar. 23). Those teams finished the 2016-17 season ranked No. 50 and No. 45 in the nation, respectively.
After spending that month at home, LBSU heads to Cal Poly (Mar. 30) and defending Big West champion UC Santa Barbara (Mar. 31) for a key conference road trip. The Beach then finishes the regular season on Friday, Apr. 20 with a home match against Cal State Fullerton.
Prior to the dual match season, Long Beach State will compete on the tour circuit this fall, starting Sep. 22 at the UNLV Tournament in Las Vegas. LBSU hosts the Beach Tennis Tournament Oct. 6-8, giving fans an early preview of the 2017-18 squad. LBSU's final preseason tune-up will be Jan. 19-21 at the Beach Tennis Winter Invitational, also hosted at Rhodes Tennis Center.
