Freshman Ebba Unden collected a myriad of honors as she was named the Big West Conference Freshman of the Year as well as to the first teams in both singles and doubles as announced by the conference office today.
Unden put together an impressive first season as a 49er, going 15-7 in singles dual matches and 17-3 in doubles, playing with sophomore Karolina Rozenberg. Unden began the season competing at the No. 2 spot in both singles and doubles, going 7-3 in singles and 9-1 in doubles, before moving up into the top spot in both. Since the move, which happened on March 7, LBSU hasn't lost a match, putting together a 12-match winning streak, good for fourth best in program history. Since the switch, Unden has gone 8-4 in singles and 9-2 in doubles. The Stockholm, Sweden native becomes the fifth player in Beach Tennis history to be named Freshman of the Year, joining Jaklin Alawi (2010), Stephanie Jeanes (2008), Hannah Grady (2006) and Stephanie Bengson (2005).
Unden is joined on the first-team All-Big West singles team by senior Klaudia Malenovska, who is honored for the second time in her career. Malenovska was a second-team selection her first year (2011) and since then has 55-23 record in singles play and owns a .705 winning percentage, good for 12th best in program history. The Bratislava, Slovakia native went 14-7 in singles dual match play, ending the year at the No. 2 spot with a 9-1 record since March 7. Malenovska and partner Sarah Cantlay also collected second-team honors for doubles as the formidable duo went 16-4 this season and are currently on a 10-match winning streak.
In addition to being named All-Big West in doubles play, Cantlay also was an honorable mention in singles as the senior went a perfect 8-0 in conference matches this year. The Sevenoaks, England native steadily climbed up the school record books in career overall wins, singles victories and doubles wins as she sits in the top five in all three categories. The senior has gone 20-3 in singles this season and won her last nine matches.
Rounding out the conference awards for LBSU is sophomore Karolina Rozenberg, who was named to the first-team in doubles play with partner Unden. The pair were undefeated (7-0) in Big West play and helped the 49ers claim their third straight conference title by beating No. 77 Kristina Smith and Franziska Goettching of UCI in the championship match last weekend. This is the first time Rozenberg has been honored.
Other winners of notable awards include Kristina Smith (UCI) being named the Player of the Year while Anteaters head coach Mike Edles and Cal State Fullerton's Bill Reynolds were awarded Co-Coaches of the Year
