April 10, 2013
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior Klaudia Malenovska collected Big West Player of the Week honors for the second time this season as announced by the conference office today.
Malenovska went 5-0 last week, helping No. 43 LBSU win three road matches in three days. Her 6-1, 6-2 win over Sacramento State's Jennifer Nguyen helped the 49ers sweep their second straight opponent. She then earned two more conference victories, picking up a 6-1, 6-2 win over UC Davis' Layla Sanders and then completed the comeback against Pacific's Hana Ritterova to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The three victories moved Malenovska's winning streak to seven in a row.
In doubles play, Malenovska, playing with fellow senior Sarah Cantlay, earned wins at both UC Davis and Pacific. The pair beat Aggies duo Megan Heneghan and Melissa Kobayakawa 8-3 and then went on to defeat Pacific's Susan Te and Gergana Boncheva 8-1.
This is the fourth time in Malenovska's career that she has earned Player of the Week honors, moving her into sole place for 11th all-time in Big West history. Two of her previous awards came in the 2011 season and she was also awarded this season on Jan. 23. Malenovska will play her final home match at Long Beach State on Saturday when the 49ers host Cal Poly at 11 a.m. at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
