Natalia Munoz Named Big West Athlete of the Week
This is the first weekly award for the freshman and third win for Long Beach State this season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - After going a combined 4-0 against two ranked opponents, Long Beach State freshman Natalia Munoz has been named Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. This is the first weekly honor for the Santa Clarita, Calif. native and it’s the third weekly honor in a row for Long Beach State. Prior to Munoz’s win, Maeva Razakasoa (Mar. 15) and Julie Gerard (Mar. 22) picked up weekly honors the previous two weeks.
Munoz was a perfect 2-0 in both singles and doubles as the Beach split its two matches against No. 39 Dartmouth and No. 46 Denver last week. Playing at the No. 5 spot in the singles order, Munoz was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Dartmouth’s Racquel Lyn and a 6-1, 6-4 winner against Denver’s Gracia Mboko.
In doubles, Munoz and partner Maren Helgo won both matches at the No. 3 spot in the order with wins of 6-3 and 6-4, respectively.
During the dual match season, Munoz is 11-3 in singles action for a team-best .786 winning percentage. She has now won four straight singles matches and eight of her last 10.
Beach Tennis returns to action this week with a home match vs. Brown on Thursday at 2 p.m., then a road match at No. 16 Pepperdine on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
