IRVINE, Calif. -

Long Beach State women’s tennis player Hayley Thompson has been named this week’s Big West Athlete of the Week as announced by the conference office yesterday.

Thompson went a perfect 6-0 last week en route to helping Beach Tennis pick up three wins in four days over non-conference foes Wyoming, Dartmouth and No. 37 Harvard. In singles, Thompson competed at the No. 5 slot and notched straight set wins over all three opponents. Her most impressive win came over Dartmouth as she only dropped one set all match to Suzy Tan to win 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Thompson competed for the first time at the No. 2 spot with Maeva Razakasoa against ranked Harvard and the pair came up clutch, picking up an 8-4 victory over Hannah Morrill and June Lee to help LBSU secure the crucial first point of the match. Thompson’s efforts helped the 49ers improve to 12-2 on the season and 10-1 when competing in the Rhodes Tennis Center.

The award marks the first of the freshman’s young career and she is the second 49er to be honored this season as Razakasoa was named Athlete of the Week on Jan. 22.

Beach Tennis is back in action at 2 p.m. today as it takes on Sacramento State in its second to last home match.
