Freshman Holly Reid has won three straight matches in singles and will look to push that streak even further as LBSU plays three non-conference matches this week.
March 18, 2014
First Serve: The Long Beach State women’s tennis team will kick off a busy week on Wednesday as the 49ers play host to three non-conference foes in four days. Beach Tennis will start by hosting Wyoming on Wednesday, followed by Dartmouth on Thursday and then finishing up the week with No. 37 Harvard on Saturday. Both weekday matches will begin at 2 p.m. while Saturday’s contest is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
Last Outing: The 49ers dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 41 Pepperdine last weekend as freshman Holly Reid recorded the lone LBSU point with her singles victory. Her win cut the Waves’ lead to one, but Beach Tennis couldn’t capitalize in the remaining matches. Two of the matches went to a deciding third set including Julie Gerard and Maeva Razakasoa, who both dropped their first sets before storming back to take their second sets respectively. However, neither one was able to capture the final sets. The loss was the first home defeat LBSU has suffered this season.
Dominance at Home: LBSU has been nearly unstoppable when playing within the Rhodes Tennis Center. A year ago, the 49ers went a perfect 11-0 at home and Beach Tennis notched seven straight victories at home to begin the 2014 season. Those 18 victories and only one loss put the 49ers at a .947 winning clip. Beach Tennis can look to improve that even more as it has four remaining home contests this season.
Scouting This Week’s Opponents: Non-conference opponents Wyoming, Dartmouth and Harvard make the trip out to California this week as LBSU will look to add to its 9-2 overall record.
- Wyoming: The Cowgirls have compiled a 4-4 record so far this season, however they have yet to win a match on the road. Wyoming is coming off two straight losses on their road trip to Lincoln, Neb. on March 7 and 8. The Cowgirls begin their California trip with Wednesday’s match at LBSU, before playing at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday and then closing out the trip on Saturday at UC Irvine. The 49ers lead the all-time series with Wyoming 2-1 and won last year’s meeting at home 5-2.
- Dartmouth: The Big Green have recorded a 3-3 overall mark this season and play their second of four matches against California opponents today at Fresno State. They began their trip last Sunday at San Jose State that resulted in a 4-2 loss. LBSU has won both previous meetings with Dartmouth, including a 6-1 victory in 2012.
- Harvard: The Crimson are the only ranked opponent left on the 49ers schedule as Harvard came in at No. 37 in this week’s rankings. The Crimson are 6-2 on the season and have won their last two matches, including a home win against Rhode Island and a road victory at Clemson. However, Harvard has been off for the last three weeks before they begin their West Coast road trip at Cal State Northridge today and then travel to San Diego State tomorrow. They finish out the trip at Long Beach on Saturday. The 49ers are 1-4 all-time against Harvard, however the two haven’t met up under current LBSU head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello.
Up Next: Beach Tennis will close out March with a single match next week against Sacramento State on Thursday. The contest is schedule to begin at 2 p.m. at the Rhodes Tennis Center. The 49ers will then travel the following weekend for a Big West road trip with matches at UC Santa Barbara on April 4 and Cal Poly on April 5.
