Helgo, Razakasoa Score Nice Wins at Southwest Regionals

Oct. 21, 2016

San Diego, Calif. - Long Beach State completed day two of the 2016 ITA Southwest Regionals on Friday, seeing a few players pick up some impressive singles wins. Senior Maeva Razakasoa earned a pair of impressive wins to advance to the quarterfinals of the main draw, while freshman Maren Helgo earned a win over the only player other than Razakasoa to win Big West Player of the Year in the past three seasons.

Razakasoa topped Arizona’s Camila Wesbrooks in her opening match by a 6-3, 6-2 score. Then in the round of 16, the Beach’s top singles player made quick work of San Diego’s Daniela Morales on her home turf, winning 6-2, 6-0. Razakasoa, who is the No. 3 seed in the regional, will now face No. 10 seed Dzina Milovanovic of Pepperdine in Saturday’s quarterfinal round.

Meanwhile, Helgo earned an impressive victory over Hawai’i’s Cindy Nguyen, taking a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 10-2 decision in the consolation draw. Nguyen, a junior who played top singles for UH last season, was the Big West Player of the Year in 2015, giving Helgo a quality win early in her LBSU career.

Two more 49ers played close matches on Friday but came up just short. Senior Hayley Thompson went to three sets with USC’s Zoe Katz, but lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Freshman Natalia Munoz also went to three sets, falling 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 to San Diego State’s Paola Diaz in the consolation bracket.

Action resumes in San Diego on Saturday morning with Razakasoa aiming to push forward in the main singles draw plus a handful of other exhibition matches in both singles and doubles play.
