SAN DIEGO – The Long Beach State tennis team opened up action at the 2017 ITA Southwest Regionals with a pair of doubles victories on Thursday morning in the round of 64. Later in the day, the Beach won three singles draws, while dropping five in the round of 128.

“We had some nice wins in doubles to start the day, but we were a little disappointed with how we finished some of our singles,” Long Beach State head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. “Good news is that we have more matches tomorrow and more opportunities to improve.”

Georgia Gulin and Carlota Casasampere kicked off the tournament with a 9-7 victory over Jana Buth and Paola Diaz of Hawaii. Following their successful doubles showing, teammates Sadaf Sadeghvaziri and Lalita Devarakonda posted an 8-5 win over Big West Conference foe Hawaii and their doubles team of Nikola Dolakova and Taylor Lau.

Casasampere came back in singles action and knocked off Grand Canyon’s Lana Rinaldi, 7-6 (5), 6-1 to win a pair of matches on the first day of tournament play, before falling to Pepperdine’s Mayar Ahmed, 6-1, 6-1.

Additionally Sadeghvaziri also picked up two victories on day one as she defeated Cal State Fullerton’s Taylor Valenzuela by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Later in the day, she dropped 7-5 and 6-4 contests to San Diego’s Daniela Morales.

Lena Pacholski picked up the final singles win for the Beach with 6-2 and 6-1 victories over the Titans’ Masako Makiba.

The Beach will be back in action Friday, Oct. 20 for the second day of action at the ITA Southwest Regionals.
