San Diego, Calif. - Long Beach State had two doubles pairs advance to the Round of 16 in the main draw at the ITA Southwest Regional in the second day of action in San Diego. Karolina Rozenberg, who had one of the two doubles wins with Ebba Unden, also advanced in the consolation singles on Friday.

Unden and Rozenberg had a big win in doubles, upsetting the eighth-seed in the tournament, Cara Brown and Stephanie Hoffpauir of San Diego in a thrilling 9-8 victory behind a convincing 7-2 tiebreaker win. Klaudia Malenovska and Anne-Sophie Willems also had a double win to advance to the Round of 16, defeating Morgan McIntosh and Kalika Slevcove of Cal State Fullerton 9-7. The 49ers only loss in doubles came in an 8-5 defeat, as Sarah Cantlay and Anna Jeczmionka fell to Inge Hendrikx and Kim Stubbe of Arizona.

Freshman Eva Rodriguez represented the 49ers in the singles main draw, and pushed a seeded opponent in (16) Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine in the Round of 32, but ultimately fell 7-6, 6-2 after pushing the tiebreaker to 10-8.

In consolation singles, Rozenberg had the big win, rolling over Hendrikx of Arizona 6-0, 6-1 to move into the Round of 16 in the back draw. The 49ers had four other players in the Round of 16, as Jeczmionka won her first match over UCLA's Megan Lester 6-2, 6-0, to advance while three others had byes. The only loss for the 49ers in the Round of 64 was by Unden, who fell to Alicia Aguilar of San Diego State in a super-tiebreaker 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.

 

 

Jeczmionka lost her second singles match on Friday to Prisilla Garcia of UC Santa Barbara 7-6 (8), 6-2, while Cantlay lost 7-5, 6-3 to Leighann Sahagun and Willems dropped a battle with Sarah Stadfelt of UC Irvine 7-5, 7-6.

Rozenberg will continue singles play on Saturday, while the two doubles pairs will try to reach the quarterfinals with an additional win in the main draw. Other matches will be made as available for the team.
