Oct. 18, 2013
SAN DIEGO - Sophomore Ebba Unden and junior Karolina Rozenberg advanced on in the main doubles draw after the pair put on a solid 8-2 performance against Grand Canyon's Gunuganti/Van de Velde on the second day of the ITA West Regional. The duo, seeded No. 5 in the draw, will face a familiar opponent from UC Irvine in Sarah Gong and Marivick Mamiit Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.
Also in doubles play were Julie Gerard and Maeva Razakasoa, who were not able to get by UCI's Ali Facey and Franziska Goettsching, falling 8-4. In the "Lucky Loser's Bracket," Hayley Thompson and Holly Reid earned an 8-4 victory over San Diego State's Kristin Buth and Hailey Johnson.
In singles matches, several 49ers put up fights, but were unable to keep winning in order to advance on in the main draw. Julie Gerard lost a close three-set match to Pepperdine's Alejandra Granillo, falling 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Ebba Unden won her first match of the day, defeating San Diego's Anna Depenau 6-1, 7-6 (5). However Unden wasn't able to continue her run on in the main draw as she fell to the No. 3 seed, Brynn Boren of USC, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Hayley Thompson was the final member to remain in the main draw after the first day, but she wasn't able to advance on as she fell to No. 8 seeded Kaitlin Ray of UCLA, 6-3, 6-1.
Play will continue on Saturday as the matches will now take place at the Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State University.
