Freshman Eva Rodriguez advances in first day at ITA Regionals

Long Beach, Calif. - Freshman Eva Rodriguez was Thursday's big winner for Long Beach State tennis, advancing to the Round of 32 in singles at the ITA Southwest Regional, which began with the first two rounds of singles.
All three doubles teams received byes into the Round of 32 after an adjustment in the draw, which meant that the 49ers only played singles matches on Thursday, but all seven players participated in the main draw.
Rodriguez, who received a bye into the Round of 64, defeated Dylan Kirsch of UCLA 6-0, 6-4, to remain in the main draw after the first day of action. Senior Klaudia Malenovska picked up the other win for the 49ers, beating Revebba Faltusz of Hawaii before falling to Kyle McPhillips, the No. 3 newcomer in the nation 6-4, 6-1 in the Round of 64.
Other matches in the Round of 64 for Long Beach State included Anne-Sophie Willems, who fell 6-0, 6-0 to No. 79 Kaitlin Ray of UCLA while Anna Jeczmionka pushed Reka Rohonyi to three sets, but ultimately fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The 49ers lost a pair of tiebreakers in their other matches, as Karolina Rozenberg lost 7-6, 6-2 to LMU's Tory Parravi in the opening round, while Ebba Unden fell 7-6, 6-1 to Arizona's Susan McRann. Sarah Cantlay lost 6-0, 6-1 in the day's other match to Katarina Poljakova of Hawaii.
Long Beach State starts doubles competition and consolation singles on Friday, while Rodriguez continues in the main draw with a match beginning at 9:30 a.m.
