SAN DIEGO - The 49ers have two doubles teams and three singles players still moving on in the winner's side of the bracket after one day of play at the ITA West Regional Thursday.
Nationally ranked duo Ebba Unden and Karolina Rozenberg (No. 59) received the highest seed out of the LBSU doubles team at No. 5 and received a first round bye. Julie Gerard and Maeva Razakasoa are the other Beach tennis team advancing as the pair won over LMU's Jessica Perez and Elanor Grossman 8-3. Holly Reid and Hayley Thompson will not be advancing on as they lost a hard-fought match to Hawaii's Nguyen/Suworowa 8-7 (5), while teammates Laura Eales and Gabriela Tilkeridisova fell 8-2 to Arizona pair James/Marker.
In singles play, two 49ers put on stellar comeback performances to move on in the winner's bracket. Sophomore Ebba Unden who received the No. 17 seed, fell behind by a set to UCSB's Kaiulani Boyer after dropping the tiebreaker 7-4. She found her rhythm in the second set to take it 6-3 before rolling to a 6-2 victory in the third set. In almost identical circumstances, Hayley Thompson dropped her first set in a tiebreaker (8-6) to San Diego's Shani Blecher, but came back to take the next two sets 6-2, 6-3.
"I was proud of how both Ebba and Hayley persevered after they dropped a close first set," head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "They didn't let it deter them from competing and it paid off for both in the end."
Julie Gerard is the other 49er who will be advancing on in the winner's bracket as she put on a dominant 6-0, 6-2 performance over USC's Paige Keating.
In other singles play, Gabriela Tilkeridisova fell 6-2, 6-4 to Tami Nguyen of Hawai'i while Karolina Rozenberg won 6-2, 6-4 against Priscilla Garcia of UCSB before falling in her second match to UCLA's Catherine Harris 6-1, 6-0. Laura Eales blanked Pepperdine's Pattaraporn Salirathavibhaga 6-0, 6-0 before falling to USC's Ellie Yates 6-1, 6-3. Maeva Razakasoa also shut out her opponent winning 6-0, 6-0 against Paulina Petriskova of Hawai'i, but she wasn't able to continue on in the winner's bracket as she fell 6-2, 6-4 to Pepperdine's Lorraine Guillermo. Finally, Holly Reid won her first match against SDSU's Isabelle Hoorn 6-3, 6-1 and then fell to No. 2 seeded Trojan Zoe Scandalis 6-1, 6-1.
All of the 49ers will be back in action tomorrow on day two of the tournament with play continuing on at the Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma.
