Beach Tennis Continues Play at Fall Tournament

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State concluded day two of the 2017 Beach Tennis Fall Tournament on Saturday at Rhodes Tennis Center. Freshman Lalita Devarakonda was 3-0 on Saturday to lead LBSU’s efforts, advancing to the Flight B consolation final in both singles and doubles.

Saturday featured two rounds of singles action and one round of doubles. In the top flight, Natalia Munoz won her first match of the day 6-0, 6-0 over Grand Canyon’s Martina Lo Pumo, but fell in a three-set match in the semifinals. In Flight C, Sadaf Sadeghvaziri also won her quarterfinal match, earning a 6-2, 6-2 win against Eszter Zador from Portland State, but she also fell short in the semifinal round.

Devarakonda was one of two Beach players to go 2-0 in the consolation bracket on Saturday. She defeated Masako Makiba of Cal State Fullerton by a 6-2, 6-2 margin, then topped LMU’s Sofiya Gaisina with a lopsided 6-0, 6-1 result. Devarakonda will play in the Flight B consolation final on Sunday at 10 a.m. In Flight D, Carlota Casasampere defeated UC Riverside’s Tammy Van, 6-3, 6-2, then dropped Autumn Prudhomme of Grand Canyon with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

In doubles, Munoz and Lena Pacholski paired up for a 6-4 victory in the Flight A semifinals, defeating Cal State Fullerton’s pair of Makiba and Zeidan. In the consolation semifinal of Flight B, Devarakonda and Sadeghvaziri defeated another pair of Titans, beating Valenzuela/Jadulang by a score of 6-2.

The 2017 Beach Tennis Fall Tournament concludes on Sunday, with finals and consolation finals in all six flights of competition. There will also be additional exhibition matches on available courts. Action starts at 9 a.m. with doubles, then singles play begins at 10 a.m. Fans should be advised that there will be road closures surrounding the Long Beach State campus on Sunday morning due to the running of the Long Beach Marathon.
