LONG BEACH -The Long Beach State women's tennis team closed out the 2013 Beach Tennis Fall Invitational on a strong note as the 49ers were victorious in four of the six championship matches Sunday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.

Doubles pair, sophomore Ebba Unden and junior Karolina Rozenberg, ranked 59th nationally, won the first title as they beat Ali Facey and Brooke Schweyer of UCI, 8-1, in the Flight A championship match. In the third place match, Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard came up short to LMU's Kouyoumijan/Mueller, falling 8-5.

In Flight B, Laura Eales and Hayley Thompson lost by a narrow 8-6 margin to Rohonyi/Jin of LMU in the final while Holly Reid and Gabriela Tilkeridisova easily put away Portland State's Todd/McDonald, 8-3 in the consolation match.

In singles play, the 49ers had at least one player in each of the four championship matches. Freshman Holly Reid capped off a perfect 3-0 weekend as she defeated Andrea Duva of UCI, 6-3, 6-4 in the Flight D final. Karolina Rozenberg won a three-set match against LMU's Reka Rohonyi 6-3, 0-6, 6-0 for the Flight C championship while Hayley Thompson narrowly missed completing the comeback in the Flight B final to LMU's Miya Jin, falling 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

Then, in the most thrilling match of the day, the all-49er Flight A final featured top-seeded Ebba Unden taking on teammate Maeva Razakasoa. The pair battled for nearly two and a half hours in 90-degree heat in a match that went down to the wire in each set. In the end, it was Razakasoa who came up with the upset as she won 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Two other singles matches were played on the consolation side of the bracket as Gabriela Tilkeridisova beat Southern Utah's Madeline Skaras 6-0, 6-1 and Laura Eales lost to the Thunderbirds' Anastasia Vasileva 7-5, 6-2.

"It was a good weekend of tennis for a young team," head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "This is a very talented group who competes well. We have identified some areas to improve upon and we are looking forward to our next tournament in two weeks."

The 49ers will finish out their fall season Oct. 18-24 in San Diego at the ITA West Regional.
