Oct. 5, 2013
LONG BEACH -The Long Beach State women's tennis team continued to put on a dominating performance on the second day of the 2013 Beach Tennis Fall Invitational at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
The 49ers' success has paid off and at least one LBSU player will be featured in each of the four singles' championship matches as well as the two doubles matches.
Sophomore Ebba Unden continued to shine as she won both of her singles matches Saturday. First, she met with Ali Facey of UCI and had little trouble as she won 6-4, 6-4. Her afternoon match saw her meet up with fellow teammate Julie Gerard where she prevailed 6-4, 6-2. Unden will play in the Flight A championship match against her other teammate, Maeva Razakasoa, tomorrow afternoon.
Gerard won her first match of the day before facing Unden as she defeated Morgan McIntosh of Cal State Fullerton 7-5, 7-5. Gerard will play tomorrow in the third place match against Kristine Kouyoumijan of Loyola Marymount.
Razakasoa won both her matches on Saturday in order to advance to the final. First, she beat UCI's Marivick Mamiit 6-2, 6-1 before moving past Kouyoumijan 6-0, 6-3 in her second match.
In Flight B, Hayley Thompson also went 2-0 on Saturday to advance to Sunday's championship match. First, she defeated Southern Utah's Jane Marushko 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 followed by victory over Sarah Stadfelt of UCI, 7-5, 6-4. She will face LMU's Miya Jin in the finals match.
Also, in Flight B was Laura Eales who came up short to Fullerton's Alexis Valenzuela 6-3, 6-3. Playing her second match in the back draw bracket, she had little trouble with Marina Todd of Portland State as Eales won 6-1, 6-0. She will play her final match in the back draw tomorrow against Southern Utah's Anastasia Vasileva.
Junior Karolina Rozenberg will play in the Flight C championship match tomorrow as she also won both her matches today. First, she cruised past UCI's Alison Klein 6-1, 6-0 and then moved on with her win over Anteater Ali Facey 6-2, 6-2. She will face LMU's Reka Rohonyi tomorrow.
Gabriela Tilkeridisova fell in her first match on Friday, matching her up with UCI's Brooke Schweyer on Saturday. Tilkeridisova moved on easily with a 6-3, 6-0 win. She then received a bye in the next round, setting her up to face Madeline Skaras of Southern Utah in her final match tomorrow.
Finally in Flight D, freshman Holly Reid remained undefeated in her LBSU career as she won against LMU's Laura Mueller 6-2, 6-0. She will face UCI's Andrea Duva in the championship match tomorrow.
"I'm so pleased with the way we played today," head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "For many of the freshman it was the first time they have ever had to play two singles matches along with a doubles match in the same day. They played tough and came out with some great wins."
In doubles play, the 49ers continued to be impressive as No. 59-ranked pair Ebba Unden and Karolina Rozenberg rolled on to the championship match with an 8-3 victory over Rohoyni/Jin of LMU. In the other semifinal, Hayley Thompson and Laura Eales weren't able to set up an all-49er final as the duo fell to UCI's Facey/Schweyer 8-5. They will now play Rohoyni/Jin tomorrow in the third place match.
In Flight B, Julie Gerard and Maeva Razakasoa advanced to the final after the pair posted an 8-4 victory over UCI's Klein/Stadfelt. They will meet LMU duo Kouyoumijan/Mueller in the final. On the consolation side, Holly Reid and Gabriela Tilkeridisova will play Portland State's Todd/McDonald.
The final round of doubles matches will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m., with singles play beginning at 10 a.m. Main draw finals matches will be played at noon. All matches will take place at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
