Long Beach - The Long Beach State women's tennis team wasted little time racking up 12 victories on the first day of the 2013 Beach Tennis Fall Invitational Friday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
Several 49ers put on commanding performances in both singles and doubles play. Sophomore Ebba Unden, who received the top seed in Flight A, dominated Courtney Pattagla of UCR 6-1, 6-1 to move on to face UCI's Ali Facey tomorrow. Julie Gerard also put on a controlling performance as she defeated Veronika Rogova of Southern Utah 6-2, 6-1. She will face Morgan McIntosh of Cal State Fullerton tomorrow. Rounding out Flight A was Maeva Razakasoa who had little trouble with Fullerton's Megan Sandford as she won 6-1, 6-1 to set up a meeting tomorrow with Marivick Mamiit of UCI.
In Flight B, Hayley Thompson won 6-4, 6-2 over CSF's Camille DeLeon while Laura Eales prevailed 6-2, 6-4 over Kristin Poei of Cal State Northridge. Thompson will take on Jane Marushko of Southern Utah tomorrow and Eales will play Alexis Valenzuela of Cal State Fullerton.
Karolina Rozenberg was the top seed in Flight C and blanked CSUN's Jutta Collett, 6-0, 6-0 to meet up with UCI's Alison Klein tomorrow. Gabriela Tilkeridisova came up short to LMU's Reka Rohonyi, 6-3, 4-6 and will play Brooke Schweyer of UCI tomorrow.
Finally, in Flight D, Holly Reid made her LBSU debut and came out with a victory as the freshman beat VJ Ganesan of UCR 6-1, 6-2. She will play Laura Mueller of LMU tomorrow.
In doubles play, the 49ers earned five more wins. Top-seeded duo Ebba Unden and Karolina Rozenberg received a first-round bye and then defeated Ivana/Rogova of Southern Utah, 8-2 to advance on to the next round. They will face LMU's team of Rohonyi/Jin. Hayley Thompson and Laura Eales put up two victories on the day, first defeating Almaguer/Pattugalan of UCR, 8-4, and then beat Cal State Fullerton's Valenzuela/Sandford 8-7 (5). They will face UCI's Facey/Schweyer in the next round.
In Flight B, Julie Gerard and Maeva Razakasoa also earned two wins as the pair blanked Fullerton's Billingsley/Penner, 8-0, and then beat Staheli/Vasileva of Southern Utah 8-1. They will play UCI's Klein/Stadfelt tomorrow in the next round. Rounding out the 49ers' doubles teams was Holly Reid and Gabriela Tilkeridisova who fell 8-1 to CSUN's Warren/Marquez. The duo then received a bye in the consolation round and will face the winner of the match between Portland State's Todd/McDonald and Northridge's Collett/Sinoway.
"We are very pleased with today's results," head coach Jenny Hilt-Costellosaid. "We played well and it was a great way to start the weekend."
All members of the beach tennis squad will continue play tomorrow in the second day of the invitational. Play begins at 9 a.m. with one round of doubles followed by singles at 10 a.m. All matches will be played at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
