Munoz Reaches Top Flight Final After Ranked Win at UNLV Invitational

Sept. 23, 2017

LAS VEGAS - The Beach wrapped up a successful day two at the UNLV Fall Invitational, with four singles wins and a doubles victory. Highlighting the day’s competition was sophomore Natalia Munoz, who defeated No. 83-ranked Aiwen Zhu of UNLV. Munoz picked up a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 win against Zhu on her home court, and she advances to Sunday’s championship match in the top singles flight.

“Natalia battled through a difficult match against a very good opponent today,” said LBSU assistant coach Anais Dallara, who was at Munoz’s court. “Her strong, aggressive game and her determination won her the match."

This was the first ranked win of Munoz’s career, and she will advance to face Washington State’s Bara Michalkova at 11 a.m. in Sunday’s championship match in the No. 1 singles draw.

The other three singles wins for the Beach came in the consolation bracket, meaning three LBSU players will be playing in a consolation final on Sunday. Senior Lena Pacholski picked up a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win to reach the top flight consolation final. In the No. 2 flight, freshman Lalita Devarakonda picked up her first singles win for the Beach, a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory. Also picking up her first singles win for LBSU was freshman Sadaf Sadeghvaziri, who was a 6-0, 6-2 winner in the No. 4 singles draw.

In doubles, Pacholski and Munoz partnered up for a win in the consolation bracket of the No. 1 draw. The pair defeated Dokic/Poling of Boise State by an 8-5 margin.

The UNLV Fall Invitational concludes on Sunday with doubles play getting things started at 10 a.m.
