LAS VEGAS - Freshman Hayley Thompson went undefeated this weekend in singles play, winning her flight and helping LBSU earn five more wins on the final day of the UNLV Invitational.
Thompson put away Southern Illinois’ Laura Hoeksta on Friday and then Mia Brandt of New Mexico State on Saturday to pave her path to the finals where she had little trouble with NMSU’s Chloe Jolliff, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Fellow freshmen Maeva Razakasoa, Julie Gerard and Gabriela Tilkeridisova also earned victories on their final day of competition. Razakasoa defeated Susana Alcarez of New Mexico State 6-3, 6-0, while Gerard won 6-3, 6-3 over Northern Arizona’s Sarah Maria Spruch. Tilkeridisova picked up the other 49er singles win as she defeated Korey Love of Southern Illinois 7-6, 6-3.
Sophomore Ebba Unden fell short against No. 41 Lucia Batta of UNLV in the Flight One final match, while junior Karolina Rozenberg was unable to pull off the comeback against North Texas’ Ana Sofia Cordero. Laura Eales also fell, losing 6-2, 6-4 to Michaela Mezcarosova of Southern Alabama.
In doubles play, 59th-ranked pair Ebba Unden and Karolina Rozenberg easily put away New Mexico State’s Ash Shrivastava and Susana Alcarez, moving the duo to 2-1 on the season. Freshman teams Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard as well as Laura Eales and Gabriela Tilkeridisova came up short against their respective opponents.
Unden and Rozenberg will compete this week in doubles play as they received an invite to the 2013 Riveria/ITA All-American Tournament. The rest of the team will resume action on Oct. 4 on the first day of the Beach Fall Invitational being held at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
