Sept. 22, 2017

LAS VEGAS - Long Beach State got its fall schedule underway on Friday at the UNLV Fall Invitational, with three freshmen making their collegiate debuts for the Beach. In all, LBSU collected four wins on Friday, playing quarterfinal matches in singles and doubles draws.

"I am pleased with how we competed today. We came up a little short in a few matches but we played hard and learned a lot," said Beach head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "In particular, our freshmen performed well in their first collegiate matches and Natalia Munoz had a strong win over a top Boise State player."

Munoz earned a hard-fought 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 over Lilian Poling of Boise State, advancing to the semifinals of the top singles flight. There she will get to face a nationally ranked opponent on Saturday, playing No. 83 Aiwen Zhu of UNLV at 11 a.m.

Freshman Georgia Gulin won her debut in the No. 3 singles bracket, topping UTEP's Maria Paula Media 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. It was a competitive day of tennis, as four of Long Beach State's six singles matches on Friday went to three sets, with Maren Helgo narrowly dropping a 7-6, 7-6 decision as well.

In doubles, Gulin/Lalita Devarakonda defeated Northern Arizona's pair of Brandy Walker and Ellie Millard by an 8-5 margin, while freshman Sadaf Sadeghvaziri partnered with Helgo for an 8-3 win over UTEP's Erandi Martinez and Alisa Morozova.

LBSU continues play at the UNLV Fall Invitational on Saturday with semifinal round action in singles and doubles, along with matches in consolation brackets. Things get underway at 10 a.m. in the desert with doubles play up first.
