Malenovska and Rodriguez reach consolation finals in second day at UNLV Invitational

Las Vegas, Nev. - Playing in the consolation round of the top singles flight, senior Klaudia Malenovska and freshman Eva Rodriguez each picked up victories to highlight the 49ers second day at the UNLV Invitational.
Malenovska, playing Northern Arizona's Hannah Stone, won the first set and then outlasted Stone in the second set 6-2, 7-6, while Eva Rodriguez recovered from a first set defeat to beat South Alabama's Emily Newton 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 on Saturday.
Freshman Ebba Unden had the busiest day for the 49ers, participating in a pair of singles matches. After falling to Texas Tech's Nikki Sanders in her first match of the day, Unden defeate Romona Ghermani of South Alabama 6-3, 6-1. Senior Sarah Cantlay picked up Long Beach State's other singles win on the day, defeating Mary Angela Martin of South Alabama 6-4, 6-1.
Anna Jeczmionka, Karolina Rozenberg, and Anne-Sophie Willems each had matches in the semifinals of their respective draws, and while brought UNLV's Iren Kotseva to three sets, none of the three were able to reach the main draw finals.
In doubles, Malenovska and Unden lost in the main draw of flight one, falling 8-2 to Burgmans/Kurteva of Auburn, while Cantlay and Rodriguez and Rozenberg and Willems each suffered close 8-6 defeats in the back draw.
Competition for the 49ers at the UNLV Invitational continues tomorrow, as most players will continue to play in arranged matches on Sunday.
