Long Beach State Falls to UCSB in Big West Semifinals
LBSU played a tight match with UCSB, but the No. 2 seed Gauchos pulled out a 4-1 win to advance to Sunday’s final.
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - Beach Tennis came up short in its semifinal match at the Big West Women’s Tennis Tournament on Saturday, suffering a 4-1 defeat against UC Santa Barbara. This was the second meeting in two weeks between the No. 3 seed Beach and the No. 4 seed Gauchos, with UCSB again pulling out a close decision. Junior Lena Pacholski was 2-0 in the match, claiming LBSU’s point with a win at No. 3 singles.
Long Beach State started the day with a narrow defeat in doubles. The No. 2 pair of Pacholski and Laura Eales secured a 6-3 victory over UCSB’s pair of Amanda Atanasson and Melissa Baker, but the Gauchos earned wins at the other two spots in the order to take a 1-0 lead.
Pacholski would win her second match of the afternoon in singles play, knocking off Jaimee Gilbertson for the second time this season. The junior earned a straight-set victory, going 6-2, 6-4 to pull the Beach back within a point at 2-1. Unfortunately, UCSB was able to pull out close matches at the top of the lineup to clinch the win. Julie Gerard at No. 2 dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Natalie Da Silveira and at the top of the lineup, Maeva Razakasoa lost a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 match to Palina Dubavets.
With the loss, Long Beach State drops to 17-6 on the season while the Gauchos improve to 16-9. UC Santa Barbara advances to Sunday’s final to take on No. 1 seed Hawai’i in a rematch of last season’s tournament final.
