LONG BEACH -
The Long Beach State women's tennis team won its second straight match in two days with a 5-2 victory over Dartmouth Thursday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
The 49ers (11-2) fought back after dropping the doubles point to take victories in five of their six singles matches. Julie Gerard tied the match up at 1-all with her singles win at the No. 3 spot. She beat Melissa Matsuoka 6-3, 6-2 while Hayley Thompson quickly followed to give LBSU the lead as she downed Suzy Tan 6-0, 6-1. Maeva Razakasoa played her first match in the top spot and she gained another win to add to her impressive record as she won 6-3, 6-4 over Katherine Yau. Karolina Rozenberg then sealed the match in the 49ers' favor as she won in three sets over Akiko Okuda. Ebba Unden slid into the No. 2 spot for LBSU and she scored the final point for Beach Tennis as she won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 over Taylor Ng.
"After losing the doubles point, I was really proud of the team for coming out so strong in singles," head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "We won all six first sets, which really gave us some momentum to win the match."
Beach Tennis will have one day to savor the victory as No. 37 Harvard makes the trip to Long Beach on Saturday to close out the week. Doubles play is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
