Beach Tennis Scores Big Win at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - Long Beach State pulled out a tough win on the road at Cal State Fullerton on Friday afternoon, taking a 4-3 victory over the Titans in a key Big West showdown. Junior Lena Pacholski scored the deciding point with a come-from-behind, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles to earn the victory. LBSU improves to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in Big West matches while Cal State Fullerton suffers its first loss of the campaign, falling to 11-1 and 2-1 in the Big West.

“I’m very proud of our team today,” said LBSU head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. “We fought back after some disappointing doubles to come up with six strong singles matches and the win.”

At the top of the lineup, senior Maeva Razakasoa earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory to increase her lead as the all-time singles wins leader at Long Beach State. Razakasoa how has 15 singles wins on the season to give her 101 in her career. Joining Razakasoa with her 15th win of the season was fellow senior Julie Gerard, who was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 2.

Freshman Natalia Munoz was the first to pick up a win in singles play, tying up the match at 1-1 following CSF’s win of the doubles point. Munoz raced out to a convincing 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot in the lineup.

The result of the match came down to No. 4 singles, as Pacholski was able to bounce back from a close loss in set one. The junior closed out the victory with a pair of 6-3 wins in the final two sets to push the Beach over the top.

LBSU is back home and back in action on Saturday, hosting San Diego at Rhodes Tennis Center. First serve will be at 11 a.m.
