Beach Tennis Pulls Out 4-3 Win at UC Irvine
LBSU trailed early after dropping the doubles point, but rallied back for the win to go 3-1 on its four-match road trip.
IRVINE, Calif. - Long Beach State was put to the test on Saturday afternoon in Irvine, but the Beach came through with a 4-3 road win to move to 6-2 on the season and 3-1 in Big West action. The loss drops UC Irvine to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in conference matches.
“It was a tough day on the court for us, but there was definitely a lot of fight to get us the win,” said Beach head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello of the match.
Senior Laura Eales was able to provide the clinching win at the No. 6 spot, earning a comeback result of 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. That gave Long Beach State the win as the 49ers claimed the first four singles results to reach the magic number. The other three wins were in straight sets, led by Lena Pacholski’s 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot.
Senior Julie Gerard was a 6-3, 7-5 winner at the No. 2 spot and freshman Natalia Munoz was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 5. Munoz also earned a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles with partner Maren Helgo, but Long Beach was unable to secure the doubles point.
LBSU returns home for a match against Georgetown on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Beach then visits Cal State Fullerton on Friday and hosts San Diego on Saturday at 11 a.m. to wrap up a busy week.
