IRVINE, Calif. -
No. 39 Long Beach State saw its 15 regular season conference winning streak come to an end Saturday as No. 30 UC Irvine won a battle 4-3 at the Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The 49ers (8-3, 4-1 Big West), playing their fourth road match in a row, fell behind early but rallied back to tie the match up at 3-3 before it was ultimately decided at the No. 1 singles spot.
In doubles play, the Anteaters (9-3, 3-0 Big West) took the point as Ali Facey and Brooke Schweyer earned an 8-1 win over Hazuki Onaga and Anne-Sophie Willem followed by No. 41 Kristina Smith and Franzisk Goettsching winning 8-5 over Klaudia Malenovska and Sarah Cantlay.
In singles play, UCI went up 2-0 early as Sarah Gong defeated Eva Rodriguez 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. LBSU then earned its first point when Karolina Rozenberg won 6-3, 6-4 over Ali Facey. UCI answered back with Sarah Stadfelt taking the win over Anne-Sophie Willems 6-4, 6-1, but the 49ers wouldn't go away quietly, tying the match up at three-all behind wins from Sarah Cantlay and Ebba Unden at the No. 3 and 2 spots. With the match on the line, Klaudia Malenovska took the first set against No. 125 Kristina Smith 6-4, but she was unable to close the match out as Smith took the next two sets 6-4, 6-1.
The 49ers will look to rebound as they start a six-match home stand to close out the month of March. LBSU will take on Eastern Michigan Thursday at 2 p.m. and No. 51 Boston College Friday at 1 p.m. Both matches will take place at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
