Feb. 21, 2014
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
Karolina Rozenberg came back in the third set of her singles match to clinch the 4-3 win for the 50th-ranked Long Beach State women’s tennis team on Friday against Cal State Northridge.
Rozenberg won the first set against Kristin Poei 6-1 before dropping the second set 6-2. The junior was then down 5-3 in the third set and won four straight games to take the set 7-5. The win clinched the victory in favor of the 49ers, who remain a perfect 4-0 in Big West play.
“Karolina played a gutsy match today,” head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. “She was willing to do whatever it took to clinch the match and I’m very proud of her and the leadership she showed.”
The hard-fought match started off with LBSU (7-1, 4-0 Big West) in a 1-0 deficit as the Matadors (4-2, 2-1 Big West) took the doubles point. In singles, freshman Hayley Thompson tied the match up at 1-all as she picked up a fast 6-0, 6-2 win over Lorraine Cheung. Shortly thereafter, Maeva Razakasoa gave LBSU the lead as she won her 12th straight singles win. CSUN proceeded to tie the match up again as they picked up a win at the No. 5 spot, but Julie Gerard gave the lead back to the Beach as she won 6-4, 7-5 over Criss Rodriguez at the No. 3 spot. With Long Beach up 3-2, Karolina Rozenberg came through to clinch the match. Northridge then scored the final point of the day after winning at the No. 1 spot.
The victory is the seventh in a row for the 49ers and keeps them atop of the Big West standings. Beach Tennis will return to the friendly confines of the Rhodes Tennis Center for the entire month of March. The 49ers will host BYU next Saturday to kick off the home stand with a noon match.
