LBSU Cruises Past San Francisco, 6-1

Feb. 12, 2017

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Beach Tennis earned a comfortable 6-1 win over visiting San Francisco on Sunday, making it three straight wins at home. LBSU won five of the six singles matches in straight sets to go up 6-0 and decide the result early on. Long Beach State improves to 3-1 on the season while USF slips to 1-4 on the year.

“I think the most important thing out of this entire weekend was, we’ve been working on a lot of things in practice, we wanted to learn from our LMU loss,” said Beach head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello after her team’s second win in as many days. “We’ve been seeing the improvement that we’ve been working out on the court and that really is our goal every match, every day to see some improvements and progress towards our goals, and we definitely did that this weekend.”

The doubles point went quickly to the Beach as the bottom two pairs took care of their matches promptly. Maren Helgo and Natalia Munoz won 6-1, then Lena Pacholski and Laura Eales were 6-2 winners at No. 2.

Helgo then earned an impressive singles victory at No. 3, winning 6-1, 6-0 to set the tone. The Beach clinched as Pacholski won 6-2, 6-3 and Eales won 6-2, 6-1. At the top of the lineup, Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard each won in straight sets. Razakasoa was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at the top spot and Gerard pulled out a 6-2, 7-6 (2) win at No. 2.

LBSU will now play four straight matches away from home, starting with San Diego State on Friday at 2 p.m. That match may be impacted due to rain, so be sure to check for scheduling updates regarding that match.
