LONG BEACH -
The 46th-ranked Long Beach State women's tennis team won its fourth straight match with a shut-out against LMU Friday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
The 49ers (4-1) were able to avenge last year's heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the Lions (1-4) and did so in fitting fashion as LBSU won at each spot in singles and doubles. The victory extended the 49ers' home winning streak to 16 matches, dating back to March 20, 2012.
In doubles play, Beach Tennis wasted little time as wins were picked up handily at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Julie Gerard and Karolina Rozenberg defeated Reka Rohonyi and Lisa Piller 8-2, while Holly Reid and Laura Eales won 8-3 over Kristine Kouyoumijan and Lauri Mueller.
Singles play saw more 49er dominance as straight set victories were picked up at the No. 3 - 6 spots. First, Holly Reid won 6-2, 6-4 over Ellie Grossman while Karolina Rozenberg quickly followed suit with a 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 97 Lauri Mueller. Hayley Thompson then sealed the LBSU win with her 6-4, 6-0 victory over Reka Rohoyni and Julie Gerard make it 5-0 as she won 6-0, 7-6 over Miya Jin. The top two spots saw matches go into the experimental "super tiebreaker" third set, but LBSU was able to capitalize first as Ebba Unden beat Kristine Kouyoumijan 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 followed by Maeva Razakasoa capturing the final point with her 1-6, 7-6, 10-5 win over Jessica Perez.
The 49ers will look to extend their winning streak tomorrow when they play host to San Jose State. Match time is schedule for 2 p.m. at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
