Beach Tennis Thumps UC Riverside, 7-0, in Home Opener
LBSU made quick work of UCR to claim its first win of the season in style.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State tennis was dominant in its home opener on Saturday at Rhodes Tennis Center, earning a 7-0 sweep of UC Riverside. The Beach improves to 1-1 on the year and 1-0 in Big West action while UCR drops to 0-3 and 0-2 in conference action.
“It was a very strong performance today,” said LBSU head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello of the win. “We played smart, aggressive tennis and executed our game plans really well.”
LBSU picked up the doubles point with wins across the board. The closest match was at No. 1 where Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard were 6-3 winners. Lena Pacholski and Laura Eales were 6-2 winners at No. 2 and Maren Helgo and Natalia Munoz won by the same margin at No. 3 doubles.
The Beach then dominated in singles action, dropping just nine games combined across six matches. Setting the tone at the top of the lineup was Razakasoa, who was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over UCR’s Karla Dulay. LBSU had four of its opening sets go 6-0, and no Highlander won more than a single game off a 49er in any first set.
The junior Pacholski and the freshman Munoz were both 6-0, 6-1 winners at Nos. 4 and 5 in the lineup, respectively. Gerard was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 2, Helgo took a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3, and Eales claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot.
