Women’s Tennis Drops Season Opener at LMU

Jan. 27, 2017

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Long Beach State came up short in its season opener on Friday afternoon, suffering a 4-3 loss at Loyola Marymount. The Beach started off the day by winning the doubles point, but the Lions won the top four singles matches to earn a comeback win on their home court. LBSU falls to 0-1 while LMU improves to 2-1 on the young season.

“It was a tough 4-3 loss today,” said Long Beach State head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. “But we are a work in progress and playing for April.”

The Beach took a 1-0 lead with a pair of 6-2 doubles wins. First, the freshman pair of Maren Helgo and Natalia Munoz claimed a victory over Anna Romeka and Siobhan Anderson at No. 3, then Lena Pacholski and Laura Eales earned their 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, defeating Julia Norlin and Camila Tumosa.

Once the match shifted to singles play, the Lions were able to get back into things by winning five of the six opening sets. Eventually, LMU would win the top four singles matchups to reach their clinching four points. Eales was the first singles win for the Beach, topping Micheline Aubuchon 2-6, 6-0, 6-4. The final result of the day was a three-set win for Munoz, as she outlasted Tumosa with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to close out the match.

LBSU now gets a week to prepare for its home opener next Saturday, which will also be the team’s Big West opener against UC Riverside. The match is set for an 11 a.m. start at Rhodes Tennis Center.
