Beach Tennis Bounces Back to Down Hawai'i 5-2
Jan. 20, 2014
The 42nd ranked Long Beach State women's tennis team won its eighth Big West match in row with a 5-2 victory over Hawai'i Monday at the UH Tennis Complex.
With scoring back to the standard format, the 49ers (1-1, 1-0 Big West) had little trouble putting away the Rainbow Wahine (1-4, 0-1 Big West) in their final road match in O'ahu.
LBSU picked up the sweep in doubles to earn the first point of the day. Julie Gerard and Karolina Rozenberg first defeated Paulina Petriskova and Rebecca Faltusz 5-2 while teammates Maeva Razakasoa and Ebba Unden quickly followed suit to win by the same score against Xenia Suworowa and Cindy Nguyen. Laura Eales and Holly Reid then completed the sweep with an 8-3 win over Kelsey Daguio and Sarah Gealer.
In singles play, it was Maeva Razakasoa who earned the second 49er point as she won her sixth straight match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Cindy Nguyen. Ebba Unden then put LBSU up 3-0 with her 6-3, 6-4 win over Xenia Suworowa and Julie Gerard sealed the victory with a win over Paulina Petriskova 6-2, 6-2. Karolina Rozenberg scored the final LBSU point as she won 6-4, 6-4 over Kelsey Daguio.
The match marked an important milestone for 49er head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello, who coached in her 400th match at the helm of the Beach Tennis program. The achievement is the most of any head coach in LBSU tennis history.
The 49ers will play at home over the next three weeks as they host a multitude of Big West and non-conference opponents. Next up will be No. 46 San Diego State as the Aztecs travel to the Rhodes Tennis Center on Saturday for a noon match.
