49ers Close Out Beach Winter Invitational With 10 More Wins

LONG BEACH, Calif. - No. 39 Long Beach State closed out the Beach Winter Invitational on a high note, collecting ten more victories Sunday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
In singles, Klaudia Malenovska rebounded from a loss on Saturday to take down No. 74 Michaela Bezdickova of New Mexico at the No. 1 spot 6-4, 5-7. 6-1. Malenovska used tough serving and a variety of shots to dominate the deciding set. Bezdickova was the only ranked player at the Invitational.
Ebba Unden and Sarah Cantlay each posted wins in straight sets for the second consecutive day at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Unden beat Maria Sablina, 6-1, 6-1 while Cantlay prevailed over Kristin Eggleston 6-2, 6-1. Eva Rodriguez held on to win against Nikolina Grbac in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 as Anna Jeczmionka only dropped one game against Katie Wookey to win 6-0, 6-1.
Anne-Sophie Willems and Karolina Rozenberg each gained victories to complete the sweep over New Mexico. Willems won 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2 against Laura Richardson and Rozenberg beat Michaela Oldani 6-2, 6-3. Hazuki Onaga took on Laura Wegleitner of Colorado at the No. 8 spot in a rescheduled match due to Colorado scratching its No. 8 match on Saturday. Onaga came out on top 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles, Klaudia Malenovska and Sarah Cantlay as well as Anne-Sophie Willems and Hazuki Onaga each won their matches by a score of 8-3 over Nevada's Stevens/Smiley and Magusiak/Maslova respectively.
The lone 49er loss came at the No. 1 doubles spot as Ebba Unden and Karolina Rozenberg fell to Verberne/Okhremchuck 8-4.
Long Beach State posted a 29-3 overall record for the Invitational including going 9-1 in doubles and 20-2 in singles. The 49ers will open up Big West conference play on Friday when they travel to Cal State Fullerton for a 1:30 match. LBSU will then return home on Saturday for a noon match against UC Riverside.
