49ers Start the 2013 Season with 10 wins on Opening Day of the Beach Winter Invitational

Klaudia Malenovska had a pair of wins for the 49ers as they won all ten matches on Friday.

LONG BEACH, Calif. - No. 39 Long Beach State opened up play in 2013 with a dominating performance, posting 10 victories at the Beach Tennis Winter Invitational on Friday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.

In doubles play against Colorado, the 49ers won at all four spots, with the most exciting match coming at the No.1 spot as Ebba Unden and Karolina Rozenberg battled Steur/Janssens to take the 9-8 (7-4) victory. Klaudia Malenovska and Sarah Cantlay shut out Quevedo/Manzi Tenorio at the No. 2 spot, 8-0, while Anne-Sophie Willems and Hazuki Onaga beat Tiefel/Watrous 8-6 at the No. 3 spot. Eva Rodriguez and Anna Jeczmionka sealed the 49ers victory with an 8-2 win over Sperry/Wegleitner.

In singles, LBSU took on Nevada and posted wins at all six spots. Klaudia Malenovska fought back against Michelle Okhremchuk at the No.1 spot to force a third deciding set, before Okhremchuk withdrew, giving Malenovska the win, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5). Freshman Ebba Unden won in straight sets against Emma Verberne, 6-2, 6-4 while Sarah Cantlay came back to win over Sophie Stevens, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. Eva Rodriguez also prevailed in three sets as she took down Sheila Smiley, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 and Karolina Rozenberg cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Monika Magusiak. Anna Jeczimionka closed out Rymma Maslova, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot, giving the 49ers a sweep on the first day of tournament action.



Long Beach State will take on New Mexico in doubles play and Colorado in singles play tomorrow in day two of the Beach Winter Invitational. Doubles play will begin at 10 a.m.
